RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several approach shafts leading to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

RAF aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey said. "They were part of a great many UK service members deployed over the holidays. This action, to take out militants who threaten our security, demonstrates how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and powerful internationally."

Last December, the American forces executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN reports Islamic State still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
